Expert Panel Recommends ‘Bharat’ Over ‘India’ in School Textbooks

New Delhi: A prominent high-level committee for social sciences, appointed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to overhaul the school curriculum, has proposed the replacement of “India” with “Bharat” in all school textbooks. Chairing this committee, C. I. Isaac conveyed their recommendation, which also includes the incorporation of “classical history” to supersede “ancient history” within the curriculum, and the inclusion of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) across all subjects. It’s important to note that the NCERT has not yet reached a decision regarding these suggestions.

In a unanimous decision, the committee proposed that the term “Bharat” should replace “India” in textbooks across all grade levels. Furthermore, they recommended the introduction of “classical history” to replace “ancient history” in these educational materials. Additionally, the committee suggests emphasizing “Hindu victories” in various historical battles within these textbooks.

C. I. Isaac, who is also a member of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), expressed, “Our textbooks currently mention our failures, but not our victories over the Mughals and sultans.” This proposal reflects a desire to create a more balanced representation of history. The NCERT is currently in the process of aligning the school textbook curriculum with the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020.

To further this effort, the council recently established a 19-member National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC). This committee will be responsible for finalizing the curriculum, textbooks, and learning materials for various classes. In addition to the aforementioned recommendations, the committee has also advised the introduction of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) across all subjects.

Among the distinguished members of the committee are ICHR Chairperson Raghuvendra Tanwar, Vandana Mishra, a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Vasant Shinde, the former vice-chancellor of Deccan College Deemed University, and Mamta Yadav, who teaches sociology in a Haryana government school. This committee’s recommendations, once implemented, are expected to reshape the way history and culture are taught in Indian schools, fostering a more inclusive and comprehensive educational experience for students.
