Central Home Minister Amit Shah Announces Implementation of CAA Before Lok Sabha Elections

In a significant announcement on Saturday, the 10th of February, Central Home Minister Amit Shah declared major strides regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He stated that notification for the implementation of CAA would be issued before the Lok Sabha elections and it would be enforced accordingly. During his visit to West Bengal last December, he asserted that nothing could hinder the implementation of CAA.

Reaffirmation of Commitment: “No Citizenship Stripped,” says Shah

According to news agency ANI, Amit Shah emphasized, “I want to make it clear that CAA will not strip anyone of their citizenship. Its sole purpose is to provide citizenship to persecuted religious minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.”

The Congress Promise vs. Reality

Amit Shah pointed out that the promise to grant citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighboring countries was originally made by the Congress party. He stated, “During the partition when minorities were persecuted, they all wanted to come to India. At that time, Congress had promised to grant them citizenship.”

Opposition Misleading the Muslim Community

The Central Home Minister accused the opposition of misleading the Muslim community regarding CAA. He stated, “Our Muslim brothers are being misled and instigated regarding CAA. CAA is solely meant to grant citizenship to religious minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.” He clarified that the objective of the CAA presented by the Narendra Modi government is to provide Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim refugees, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, who arrived in India before December 31, 2014, from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

“This Election is about Development versus Corruption”

Speaking about the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Home Minister asserted that this election revolves around development versus corruption. He said, “This election is not about I.N.D.I.A versus NDA. It’s about corrupt governance versus zero tolerance for corruption. This election is about those who want to ensure national security versus those who jeopardize national security in the name of foreign policy.” It is noteworthy that after the passage of the CAA by Parliament in December 2019 and its subsequent approval by the President, protests erupted in various parts of the country.
