Gopichand thus became the second Indian in history to go to space. Rakesh Sharma’s name is recorded as the first Indian to go to space, who achieved this record in 1984 in the Russian aircraft Soyuz T-11.

Gopichand is a resident of Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. He has become the second citizen of India and the first civilian Indian to go to space.
