CBSE Board Exams 2024: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is all set to commence the 10th and 12th board examinations from February 15, 2024, and has already issued the admit cards for the same. However, this year marks a significant change as CBSE students will have the opportunity to appear for the board exams twice. Recently, the Ministry of Education made a significant announcement regarding the board exams, stating that they will now be conducted twice a year.

This change aligns with the New Education Policy (NEP) and its reforms in the education system. As per the new policy, students of CBSE Class 10th and 12th will now sit for board exams twice a year. It is speculated that the first session will be held in November-December 2024, with the second session scheduled for February-March. However, no official announcement has been made by the CBSE regarding this matter as of yet.

Implications of the New Curriculum Framework

Last year, the Ministry of Education announced the conduct of board exams twice a year under the New Curriculum Framework (NCF). This framework aims to bring changes to the examination system, ensuring that the board exams are not overwhelming for students while also increasing the pass percentage. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan mentioned that students will have the option to appear for the Class 10th and 12th board exams twice a year, similar to the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Students can choose their best scores without any compulsion.

Shift from Annual to Biannual Board Exams

Traditionally, the CBSE as well as all state boards, including the UP Board, Rajasthan Board, MP Board, and CBSE, have conducted board exams only once a year. Whether it’s the UP Board, Rajasthan Board, MP Board, or CBSE Board, all board exams for Class 10th and 12th are usually held from February to April. However, for the past two years, CBSE has been conducting the 10th and 12th board exams from February 15.

Benefits of Biannual Assessments

The move towards biannual board exams brings forth several advantages for students and the education system as a whole:

  1. Reduced Examination Stress: Biannual exams will distribute the examination burden evenly across the academic year, reducing stress on students.
  2. Opportunity for Improvement: Students will have the chance to improve their scores by appearing for the exams twice, enhancing their academic performance.
  3. Flexibility in Planning: The biannual exam system allows students to plan their studies more effectively, ensuring better preparation for each session.
  4. Better Evaluation of Students: With two chances to perform, students’ abilities and knowledge can be assessed more comprehensively, providing a fair evaluation.
  5. Alignment with NEP Objectives: The shift towards biannual assessments aligns with the objectives of the New Education Policy, promoting holistic development and reducing the emphasis on rote learning.
