Why Khatu Shyam is called ‘Hare ka Sahara’ (Why Khatu Shyam Called Hare ka Sahara)
It is said that Barbarika had sought permission from her mother to take part in the Mahabharata war. But the mother felt that it would be difficult for the Pandavas to win the war since the Kauravas had more forces. Therefore, he took a promise from Barbarik that if he supported the same side in the war, he would be losing.
Barbarik obeyed his mother and promised that he would support only the losing side. That is why Khatu Shyam is called the support of the defeated. Khatu Shyam means, Ma Saivayam defeated: i.e. the one who provides strength to the defeated and disappointed people.
