Petrol pump fraud is unfortunately common in India, with reports of attendants deceiving customers surfacing frequently. Sometimes, customers are overcharged, while other times, they don’t receive the correct amount of fuel in their tanks. In many instances, adulterated fuel is also dispensed. Here, we’ll explore some tips and suggestions to help you avoid fraud at petrol pumps.

Always Check the Meter

Whenever an attendant begins refueling your vehicle’s tank, always check the meter first. Ensure that the meter reads zero and that the attendant has reset it before starting.

Be Vigilant with Tricks

A common tactic for attendants is to fill your vehicle with fuel at a price higher than what you’ve asked for. For instance, if you ask for fuel worth 500 rupees, they might start filling it from 200 rupees and then pretend to reset the meter.

Another trick is to distract you while refueling. They might ask you to sign a receipt, check your tire pressure, etc.

Verify the Quantity

If you suspect that you’re not receiving the full quantity of fuel, you can ask the attendant to check the quantity. This involves a test where the attendant fills a calibrated container with a specific amount of fuel. If the container doesn’t fill up with the correct quantity, you’ll understand that you’re not receiving the full amount of fuel.

Refuel at Reputable Petrol Pumps

Whenever possible, try to refuel at a petrol pump that you know and trust. This is particularly crucial when traveling to a new area. The likelihood of being cheated at pumps with well-managed staff is lower compared to those where there’s less oversight on the attendants. Additionally, stay informed about the current prices of the fuel you’re demanding and ensure that the pump is charging you accordingly.

Opting for Premium Petrol

Sometimes, attendants might fill your tank with more expensive premium petrol without your consent. Premium petrol often contains additives to boost octane ratings. While it won’t harm your car’s engine, it does come at a higher cost.
