Significance of Bada Mangal
According to Hindu mythology, it was during the month of Jyeshtha in the Treta Yuga when Lord Rama met the mighty Hanuman. This is why Tuesdays of this month are revered as Bada Mangal. Worshippers believe that on this day, Hanuman Ji blesses them and resolves all their troubles. Temples echo with devotional songs, and communities organize religious feasts (bhandara) to celebrate this auspicious day.
History of Bada Mangal
The tradition of celebrating Bada Mangal dates back to the reign of Nawab Saadat Ali (1798-1814). Legend has it that once Nawab’s son, Mohammad Ali Shah, fell severely ill. Despite all efforts, his condition didn’t improve. It was then suggested to the Nawab and his wife to pray for their son’s recovery at the Hanuman Temple in Aliganj, Lucknow. They followed the advice, and miraculously, their son’s health improved. In gratitude, the Begum promised to construct a temple. The temple’s construction was completed during the month of Jyeshtha, giving rise to the tradition of celebrating Bada Mangal.
