Why Makar Sankranti Holds Great Importance? (Makar Sankranti Importance)

According to mythological beliefs, Makar Sankranti marks the day when the Sun God visits his son, Saturn. This festival commemorates their unique father-son reunion. As per ancient tales, when the Sun God visited his wife Chhaya and met his son Saturn, the latter welcomed him with black sesame seeds.

Pleased by the gesture, the Sun God blessed Saturn, proclaiming that whoever offers black sesame seeds to him on the day of his transition into the Capricorn sign will be bestowed with prosperity and abundance in life. Considering Capricorn as Saturn’s zodiac sign, Makar Sankranti is held in high regard due to this divine connection.

Significance of Til-Gud (Sesame and Jaggery) during Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti signifies the juncture between the winter and pre-spring seasons. This festival falls amidst the chilly weather of January, prompting traditions of sun worship, consuming a mixture of rice and sesame-jaggery, ensuring well-being and resilience against the changing weather. It’s believed that offerings of jaggery, sesame seeds, and millets please Lord Surya.

According to religious scriptures, offering sesame seeds reduces the malefic effects of Saturn. Consumption of sesame seeds mixed in water during bathing leads to liberation from sins and relief from hardships. Additionally, incorporating sesame seeds in rituals and oblations aids in liberation from malevolent forces, ensuring contentment for ancestral spirits during Shraaddh (rituals for the departed).
