Why is Kurma Jayanti celebrated? (Kurma Jayanti Significance)

There is mention of Kurma incarnation of Lord Vishnu in different Puranas. According to Linga Purana, when the earth was going towards the abyss, Vishnu incarnated in the form of a tortoise and saved the earth from destruction. It is told in Padma Purana that during the churning of the ocean, when Mandarachal mountain started sinking into the lake, Lord Vishnu took the form of a tortoise and carried it on his back. By worshiping the tortoise incarnation of Lord Vishnu on Kurma Jayanti one attains salvation.

Story of Kurma Avatar (Kurma Jayanti Katha)

According to Narasimha Purana, Kurmaavatar is the second incarnation of Lord Vishnu, while according to Bhagwat Purana, he is the eleventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to the legend, Rishi Durvasa got angry at Indra and by cursing the gods of becoming godless, he destroyed their happiness and prosperity. Lakshmi ji disappeared in the sea. Then, as per the orders of Lord Vishnu, Indra along with the demons and gods got ready to churn the ocean.

To churn Mandarchal Parvat, Mandarchal Parvat was made into a churner and Nagraj Vasuki was made into a rope, but due to there being no base under Mandarchal, it started drowning in the sea. Seeing this, Lord Vishnu took the form of a huge Kurma (tortoise) and became the support of Mandarachal in the sea. That day was the full moon of Vaishakh month. After this the brainstorming ended.
