Pitru Paksha, also known as Shradh or Mahalaya Paksha, holds profound significance in Hindu tradition. It spans over 15 days, during which Hindus pay homage to their ancestors through various rituals. According to scriptures, this period is believed to be when the souls of ancestors visit the Earth from the realm of Pitru Loka.

Pitru Paksha in the year 2024 commences on September 17th and concludes on October 2nd. This fortnight-long observance is marked by solemn ceremonies aimed at honoring departed souls.
Tithis of Pitru Paksha 2024
- Pratipada (September 18, 2024): The first day of Pitru Paksha, dedicated to performing rituals for ancestors.
- Dwitiya (September 19, 2024): The second day when homage is paid to forefathers.
- Tritiya (September 20, 2024): Observance of rituals continues on the third day.
- Chaturthi (September 21, 2024): An important day for performing Tarpan and Pind Daan.

The ideal time for performing Shradh karma is around noon, approximately at 12 PM. Just as offerings are made to gods through fire rituals, ancestors are believed to be appeased by offering food to crows and Brahmins during this time.
