Volkswagen Unveils Plans to Step into India's Electric Car Market by the End of This Year

In a move set to revolutionize the automotive landscape in India, Volkswagen has announced its intention to enter the electric car space by the end of this year. The company is introducing the electric SUV Volkswagen ID.4 to the Indian market, which has already been making waves internationally and is slated for launch in the final quarter of 2024. This model will be brought in as a completely built unit (CBU).

Exploring Volkswagen ID.4: Features and Specifications

Impressive Dimensions:

Measuring at 4,584mm in length, 1,852mm in width, and 1,612mm in height, the Volkswagen ID.4 boasts a wheelbase of 2,766mm. Its generous boot capacity of 543 liters and ground clearance of 210mm make it a versatile choice for various terrains.

Diverse Powertrain Options:

The global variant of the Volkswagen ID.4 comes with several powertrain options, including a single-motor rear-wheel-drive and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration. There are expectations that the company will introduce the GTX variant of the electric SUV, featuring a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup.

Performance Specifications:

In this variant, an electric motor is placed on the front axle and another on the rear axle, resulting in a combined output of up to 299hp and 460Nm of torque. The vehicle may be equipped with a 77kWh battery pack, providing a range of up to 480km on a single full charge.

Lower-Spec Rear-Wheel-Drive Version:

Generating 204hp and 310Nm of torque, the lower-spec rear-wheel-drive version also houses a 77kWh battery pack but can offer a driving range of up to 520km on a single charge. The battery can be charged via an 11kW AC supply and also supports 125kW DC chargers, enabling a quick charge of up to 320km driving range in just 30 minutes.

Pricing and Competition

Expected to be introduced as a CBU model, the VW ID.4 is anticipated to be priced between 50 to 60 lakh rupees. This places it in competition with models such as the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Volvo XC40 Recharge, promising an exciting showdown in the Indian electric vehicle market.

By making strides in the electric vehicle segment, Volkswagen aims to not only expand its presence but also contribute to India’s sustainable mobility goals. With its advanced features, impressive performance, and competitive pricing, the Volkswagen ID.4 is poised to make a significant impact on the Indian automotive industry, catering to the evolving needs of environmentally conscious consumers.
