Prayagraj Magh Mela: In the historic city of Prayagraj, the commencement of the Magh Mela on Monday marked the beginning of a spiritual journey for millions. This annual event, deeply rooted in Hindu traditions, witnesses a surge of devotees participating in the first bathing festival on Makar Sankranti, despite the chilly weather. The Magh Mela of 2024 is not just a religious gathering but a precursor to the grand Kumbh Mela of 2025, regarded as one of the largest religious congregations on Earth.
The Grandeur of Magh Mela 2024
Spread across 768 hectares and divided into six sectors, the Magh Mela of 2024 is a spectacle of faith and devotion. For the first time, six pontoon bridges have been constructed to facilitate the movement of pilgrims. This year’s event is marked by several firsts, including the use of Artificial Intelligence for better management and declaring the Mela as completely plastic-free. Over 100 kilometers of checkered plates have been laid to form makeshift roads, ensuring smooth access for the devotees.
Innovations and Facilities: Ensuring Comfort and Safety
Understanding the magnitude of this event, the administration has put in place robust arrangements. Deep water barricading stretches for 3.5 kilometers, and there is a 2-kilometer river line. Lost and found centers, extensive checkered plate paths, numerous substations, and thousands of LED streetlights are just a few of the many measures taken to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for the attendees. Medical facilities including hospitals, primary care centers, and ambulances are stationed throughout the Mela area. With over 1,800 public toilets and more than 12,000 institutional toilets, the administration has prioritized hygiene and sanitation.

The first bathing day of the Magh Mela 2024 saw an overwhelming influx of devotees, with estimates suggesting the arrival of millions. This outpouring of faith is a testament to the cultural and spiritual significance of the Mela. Preparations for the Mela: A Review by CM Yogi Adityanath
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, in his review of the preparations for the Magh Mela, emphasized its importance as a rehearsal for the upcoming Kumbh Mela in 2025. He recalled the 2019 Kumbh Mela, which UNESCO declared as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The 2025 Kumbh Mela is set to be a global event, with expectations high from around the world. It presents an opportunity for India to showcase its cultural richness and heritage on an international stage.
