Delhi-NCR Battles Intense Fog and Cold Wave: A Comprehensive Weather Update

As winter deepens its grip, Delhi-NCR is currently experiencing a significant drop in temperature, accompanied by dense fog that has escalated the woes of its residents. The visibility in many areas has plummeted to near zero, severely impacting the movement of vehicles on roads and trains on tracks. Several flights have also been diverted due to the reduced visibility.

The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for fog in Delhi, advising people to exercise caution while stepping out. The fog is expected to lessen gradually over the next two days, with moderate fog still possible on December 28.

Monday’s Record-Breaking Fog and Temperature Trends

Monday witnessed the season’s thickest fog, particularly in Delhi and other parts of Northwest India. Visibility around Palam Airport dropped to virtually zero for about two hours. In several parts of Delhi, visibility was less than 200 meters.

Regarding temperatures, Monday’s maximum was recorded at 23.6 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature was expected to be around 7.8 degrees Celsius, which is considered normal. The humidity level varied between 46 to 100 percent.

The forecast for the following days indicates partial cloud cover with dense to very dense fog. Morning temperatures are likely to hover around 24 degrees Celsius, with minimum temperatures dropping to 7 degrees Celsius. This pattern is expected to continue until December 29, with maximum temperatures ranging from 23 to 24 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures between 7 and 9 degrees Celsius. Towards the end of the month, from December 30 to 31, the maximum temperature may rise to 25 degrees Celsius, with minimum temperatures around 9 degrees Celsius.

Upcoming Weather Disturbances and Rain Predictions

SkyMet weather forecasts suggest that parts of Northwest and Central India might experience rain on the evening of December 31. A significant Western Disturbance is expected to reach the Western Himalayas around December 29 or 30. This disturbance could bring rain and snowfall in regions like Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Apart from Delhi-NCR, western Rajasthan, western Madhya Pradesh, and western Uttar Pradesh might also receive rainfall, although heavy rain is not anticipated. The hilly regions are likely to experience more rainfall, with scattered to significant rain and snowfall expected on December 29. The intensity of rain and snowfall is likely to increase on December 30 and 31.

Staying Safe and Prepared

With the meteorological department’s alert and the forecast of dense fog and cold wave conditions, it is crucial for residents and travelers in the affected regions to stay informed and prepared. Reduced visibility can lead to challenging travel conditions, so it’s advisable to plan journeys accordingly and exercise caution, especially during the early morning and late night hours when fog tends to be thickest.

Residents are also advised to dress warmly to protect against the cold wave conditions. It’s important to stay updated with the latest weather updates and advisories from the Meteorological Department, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety and well-being during this winter season.
