India's Solar Pioneer: Ishwar Dholakiya's Visionary Energy Revolution

India stands at the cusp of an energy revolution, particularly in the wake of potential electricity crises looming over the nation. Approximately 80% of India’s electricity needs are met through fossil fuels, a dependency that has tethered the country to global energy fluctuations, exacerbated by the relentless march of climate change. Forecasts suggest that by 2030, India’s energy imports might surge to over 53% of the nation’s total energy consumption, a concerning trajectory.

Recognizing the Energy Shift

In the realm of the diamond industry, the visionary Ishwar Dholakiya has long been attuned to the needs and possibilities of alternative energy sources. His foray into solar energy was groundbreaking, especially at a time when a serious business model concerning alternative energy in India was yet to gain traction globally.

During this period, Ishwar resolved to step into the domain of solar energy, pioneering India’s journey toward becoming a leading producer of alternative energy. In a candid conversation with Economic Times Hindi, Goldi Solar’s Founder and Managing Director, Ishwar Dholakiya, elaborated on this transformative journey.

Pioneering Steps in Solar Energy

Reflecting on the inception, Ishwar shared, “Back in 2008, the concept of solar energy lacked the awareness it commands today. It’s a common trend for businessmen to enter established industries. While the concept of solar energy existed, there were no success stories we could count on. In India, we observed certain companies monopolizing the sector, much like in Europe.”

He further disclosed, “For a year, we extensively researched whether we should venture into this business. We comprehended the technologies from Germany and Japan, visited plants, invested ample time in research and development. We believed that this would be a significant achievement for India too. Thus, Goldi Solar was established in 2011, commencing from 10 megawatts and scaling up to 3000 megawatts.”

Goldi Solar: A Pioneer in Solar Technology

Goldi Solar presently stands as one of the factories contributing to the construction of India’s largest solar plant. Their automated facility sprawled across 23 acres in Surat operates seamlessly. Ishwar emphasizes that the plant operates with 80 parameters for module checking, ensuring efficiency akin to plants installed a decade ago.

The company also places substantial emphasis on exports, with a consistent export trajectory to Europe, America, South America, Africa, and ongoing discussions with Middle Eastern countries. Within India, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan boast the majority of Goldi Solar’s plants, even on underutilized lands.

Impact of Solar Energy on Economy and Environment

The relevance of solar energy as a primary electricity supply technology in the foreseeable future cannot be overstated. A kilowatt of solar energy saves 77 kilograms of coal burning and prevents the release of 136 kilograms of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. As India’s renewable energy expands, its direct impact on the nation’s economy becomes increasingly palpable.

Should India successfully export its services and technological advancements, it would mark a significant stride forward. Ishwar’s commitment to environmental awareness transcends mere business, aiming for a sustained and positive impact on future generations’ lives. He envisions solar energy as the beacon illuminating a cleaner, accessible, cost-effective, and enduring energy future.

Commitment to Social Welfare

Ishwar, through Goldi Solar Foundation, initiated transformative measures in his villages. Each household was equipped with free Wi-Fi and provided laptops, ensuring the younger generation’s involvement with new technologies and education. Additionally, the company focused on empowering rural women, offering them courses for self-sufficiency.

His efforts haven’t gone unnoticed, earning Ishwar Dholakiya recognition as one of the ‘Top 100 Powerful Business Leaders in India,’ and Goldi Solar being listed among India’s top 100 SME companies. His pursuit of flying led him to obtain a private pilot’s license within a mere 18 days. Today, Goldi Solar supplies energy to international brands in over 20 countries, spanning continents.

Ishwar’s journey epitomizes the transformative power of determination, innovation, and social responsibility, ensuring that India not only keeps pace with global energy transitions but leads them.
