Rahul Gandhi’s Chhattisgarh Rally: Unveiling the Jatigat Janaganana Controversy

Rahul Gandhi’s recent rally in Chhattisgarh has brought the Jatigat Janaganana (caste-based census) controversy into the spotlight. In a passionate speech, the Congress MP questioned the Central Government’s reluctance to conduct a caste-based census, a topic that has been a subject of debate in the country.

“Why do you shy away from releasing the caste-based census data if you claim to work for the oppressed?” Gandhi asked, addressing the government. He emphasized the need for transparency and called upon the government to release the statistics that were gathered during a previous census conducted by the Congress-led government.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, often uses the term “OBC” (Other Backward Classes) in his speeches, making it a point of discussion. However, Gandhi questioned why the government hesitates to conduct a caste-based census if they are genuinely working for the OBCs.

Gandhi also criticized the government’s treatment of laborers and the policies they have implemented. He highlighted that while the government’s actions seem to favor industrialists like Adani, the Congress party is focused on policies that benefit farmers, tribals, Dalits, and marginalized communities. He pointed to the success of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) as an example of their commitment to the welfare of the underprivileged.

He further raised concerns about the bureaucracy in India, stating that only a small number of people, specifically those from the marginalized sections, hold significant positions in the government. He highlighted that a mere 3 out of 90 officers in control belong to the backward classes.

Gandhi also called attention to the country’s budget, which stands at a staggering 45 lakh crore rupees. He argued that the government can take two approaches to governance: either focus on the welfare of the wealthiest or prioritize the needs of the poorest, laborers, and the unemployed. He claimed that the Congress party is dedicated to helping the latter.

In the recent Lok Sabha session, Rahul Gandhi reiterated the need for a more accurate representation of OBCs in India’s population data. He claimed that the OBC population is likely closer to 50-55% in India, a significantly higher figure than the 5% figure that has been mentioned in official records. He emphasized the importance of the OBC community knowing their actual representation for better policy formulation.

Gandhi concluded his speech by highlighting the promises made by the Congress party in the previous elections, which included fair compensation for farmers, loan waivers, and subsidized electricity bills. He stated that his party has fulfilled these commitments, disproving the skepticism of the opposition.
